Back Kitchens

A back kitchen is definitely not a utility room but rather it is a modern take on the traditional scullery. It is a purpose-designed space where busy cooks can delegate prepping tasks, store less frequently used china and glassware, keep wine ready for parties and house back-up appliances such as an extra dishwasher and freezer. Ideal for people who entertain regularly, it keeps the main kitchen area uncluttered, even amidst a great party.

If located between the kitchen and the dining room, it can also be used as a butler's pantry to give extra serving space, easy access to glassware, platters, trays and linens. Often called the "dirty" kitchen as dinner parties are not only prepped in this space but dirty china and pans are cleared out of the kitchen into this room too.
